My brain started to melt around 5:07 into this video... because I realized just how deeply I as a casual player was being "farmed" as a Knight-Captain/Champion who could only PVP after raids. The leaders of that group would constantly call full-halts to our group PVP'ing together, sometimes after only 2-3 games, even though we rarely lost a single game... I'm now 99.99% sure that myself and the one or two other people who would join this group multiple times per week (with all of our raid gear) were just platforms for their GM titles. INSANE!

I find that people who attack nostalgia are upset because they don't have the same ties to the history of the specific media as those who feel nostalgic for it. It's part jealousy, part narcissism, and sometimes a willful ignorance borne of the desperation to defend progress for the sake of defending progress. Be wary of those who viciously attack history and foundational experiences.

Exactly! People are no longer willing to put in the time and the work that is required to be successful in an MMORPG. Add to that the fact that the existing player base is now old and jaded and no longer tolerates inexperience, thus creating an environment that is nowhere near inviting to new players, and what you get is an the inevitable demise of the genre itself.

Bro no. Most new mmos fail to get people cause the world it self is unintresting. People are not intrested in window dressing. Why old games like wow are still relivent cause of the loot and forcing the working together. You do not get that with new games. No loot if you work together. Also no end goals. Loot is very important. But so is challanges. I already know a great way to make a good system. All these games fail in one area or another. But all are learning lesson of the greedy consumer.

Well it doesn't help when the f2p or trial accounts are blocked entirely from talking. That makes you feel alone for one. There's also how quickly people just want to run the content, you're not even given time to explore dungeons you're expected to know the mechanics or just let the experienced people run you through it fast... so that's kind of soul sucking.

  • @Selki933

I never thought of MMOs as antisocial until I started playing GW2. And the big irony is, it doesn't have an automatic group finder, and you are actually forced to communicate to form a group. In ESO with an automatic group finder it's actually easier to encounter people with whom you have a relationship that lasts longer than the time needed to complete the dungeon. And the community itself in GW2 is eager to help too, so it's definitely not that either. Yet somehow it's not removing the anti-socialness from the overall experience. In ESO if I just spend 2-3 hours a day doing dungeons, I'll have a friend invite every week or so. In GW2 I had maybe like 3 in the past 5 years. I think the bigger problem is actually the lack of the experience of group progression. There are no challenges that you feel like you can overcome together, which is what actually creates bonds. In GW2 if the group is struggling, it's common for the person that is experienced to just quietly give it a few tries and then leave. In ESO that experienced person is much more likely to explain mechanics which would improve the performance of others. But it's not due to the inclinations of the individuals within a community, but because of encounter design. If the experienced person can't tell what exactly went wrong, and whose fault it is, you can't really give constructive feedback, and there is no guarantee that the people in your group will get better over time, so leaving is the more rational thing to do. Another part of the equation is how easy or hard it is to carry a group. In ESO I had lots of experiences in dungeons that I knew well, with lots of 1-shot mechanics, where I could still solo a big part of the encounter and/or revive the rest of the group. In GW2 it's impossible, because most builds that do good DPS can't just switch to more cautious and defensive play mid-fight, and supports contribute so much to the DPS performance that you are basically useless without them. So in GW2 if supports are dead, it's game over if you can't revive them in a timely manner. I don't know what it's like in WOW now, because I haven't played it in over 10 years, but from what I remember, it was actual danger in the open world that forced people to group up. It's a different thing that is missing in both GW2 and ESO, but idk if it still applies in WOW either. So yeah, I blame the anti-socialness not in convenience and time saving features, but on the lack of transparency and the insignificance of individual contributions.

Easy, because WoW killed social gaming :). MMOs before WoW (even 2 weeks before its release) highly needed group play (mostly) and in a way that you should not mess with other people, because you might get known as an asshole on the server you're playing on. And you don't want that, because you can't play the game anymore, because it kind of requires group play. WoW does not require that (at any point), it is completely soloable, sure it will take a while with these and that classes yada yada... but you get the point. Experienced MMO players came from a group focussed game design philosophy and poured that mindset into the community of WoW. Since they built the bridges for all the newbies who entered the MMO space, the early days of WoW were remembered like the game were truly "social". But it never was. Sure, there were RP servers and nice guilds here and there and it was overall welcoming and supporting, no doubt. But WoWs game design isn't revolved around socializing. Now you can see the problem with WoWs shitty game design (sorry, but it is shit) quite clearly. The open world is soloable and enemies aren't that intelligent or have group AI etc. the contrast here are instances and raids, where you HAVE TO socialize. Since people can only learn how it works, by entereing an ini, experienced players are confronted with newbies who probably never played an ini before. Which is frustrating for some people (understandably in a way, of course). Besides guides, youtube videos or noob-friendly mates, there's no way for a new player to learn the mechanics, the culture etc. All this leads to a toxic cesspool that the WoW community has become over time. An elitist, ignorant toxic mess that's far from social or welcoming. Sure, there are exceptions here and there, but you can feel it in WoW and even all WoW-like MMOs nowadays. After a small anectode, I'll show a game that "solves" this whole problem. I've played New World on release and it was fun, leveling was fun, new and fresh. Everyone needed to learn the new dungeons and we obviously haven't played optimal builds or dungeon setups. We cleared the dungeons after some tries, but we kept motivating each other via chat and managed to kill the boss(es). It was really, really fun (all strangers btw) and a great experience that I had over and over again on release. I've started a new character in New World with their "fresh start" servers. Now everything changed. I actually had a group of people who were Lv 50-60 already in the first (!) dungeon who were a bunch of WoW players (obviously) who screamed at each other that they're doing this and that wrong and we struggled really hard, nobody understood the mechanics and the layout of the dungeon and how to progress through it. Everybody just rushed through the dungeon and never paid attention to anything. They were mostly playing DPS characters and all they did was smashing buttons. The prime example of ogers basically. Well, we managed to beat the dungeon after about the double amount of time with a "meta dungeon composition" with a group full of people (except me) who already were Lv 50-60 as stated above in a Lv 30 dungeon. The double amount of time, compared to a bunch of newbies (iirc even without a proper healer... some took a heal staff with them and that was it lol) who had a great time at launch. Guess what? The first experience was awesome. The second was shitty for everyone in the group. No let's talk about EverQuest 2, I've started playing it with the launch of the Origins Server. Besides a really nice quest design from time to time, voice acting here and there and still quite good graphics... the grouping is awesome! For real, there are bunch of mobs that have a warrior and a priest in them for example and the enemy priest actually heals the enemy warrior, so you - as a player - can already learn that it's probably smart to kill the healer first, which is a nice preparation for later dungeons. Additionally there are so called "Heroic" monsters in the open world. On the starter island there are just a few of them that you can probably only kill in a proper group, it's almost like a modern world boss basically (sadly without xp share etc, it's an old MMO in the end that still has kill steal mechanics :/). And you already have some quests that require you to group up with people. You learn to socialize with them, talk to them in a group chat and plan how you want to solve the next step in the quest (where do we meet? what monsters are inside? focussing this or that monster? ...). And not only that, especially more grindier locations like the Commonlands are nice in a group. You're constantly communicating with each other. Who needs to do what quest, some veterans can show and explain some other quests, because some quests actually need you to read and understand what you should do next etc. Lots of great grouping and social content, even though EQ2 already is quite solo "friendly" (as a necro at least lol) already. People craft for each other, talk a lot and the chats are really active! I've not met a real asshole yet and I'm sure I will as soon as I can enter the first raid lol. But so far (Lv 11 now) it's really helpful and surprisingly welcoming. A great experience that truly feels like a MMO again. And to this "people don't need to socialize anymore, because of Discord" argument: well, people met in TeamSpeak back in the day to drink lots of booze while mining in EVE Online (2003 - source: their making of). So just because you have other ways where you can socialize, it doesn't mean that it's always the better or more comfortable one in the end. What matters is the game design and whether the game design supports grouping and socializing or actually punishes the player for doing that. Thanks for coming to my TED talk :D.

All this is why I just play SWTOR now. Far from a perfect game but, it took me 5 hours to get the 336 gear level to pvp. Took another casual few weeks of play to get the implants, tactical upgraded. I can just log in now when I want and have fun trashing people in a warzone (battleground). Vanilla was similar "back in the day" on a class like mage/rogue (certainly not warrior) but this isn't back in the day. Everything is so min maxed now that unless you have low barrier entry to things like pvp or raiding, the game becomes a 40 hour a week job (if you want to play a couple characters)to do a few hours of something you actually like. In addition you don't really get choices. You HAVE to do things you simply don't enjoy. How many people raid in SOD just so they can do some pvp? What a waste of time...In SWTOR they have a weekly that gets you the currency for the implants, tactical but it can involve pretty much anything. Leveling, pvp, raiding, dungeons, crafting whatever contribute. Casually pvping I was able to get all the tacticals and implants for all the classes I wanted to play and the gear shares between characters or is easily bought through the vendor once you hit an item level threshold. If a MMO doesn't let you play the way you want, play with who you want and still progress it has simply failed. WoW separates friends. It's why the community is such garbage. In SWTOR i can dominate pvp playing 2 hours a week, play 4 different classes in pvp which prevents me from getting bored or if I have some extra time do whatever the f@%^ I want, leveling someone, helping them out and not feel like I'm screwing myself out of FOMO itemlevel, powerlevel endless treadmill nonsense. It blows my mind people still play WoW. The game feels like a psyop to ruin lives at this point. 3 expansions, parsing culture making the time investment INSANE just to do faceroll raid content outside retail which requires the game to be your job in mythic. Try ANYTHING but WoW. Try Guild Wars, try FF whatever or play single player games for a bit so you realize that if a MMO takes that away, then it just ain't worth it. If you are having FUN, then why would ever go back to what is essentially a job? I think without Twitch and influencers WoW would have died a decade ago. It just made people feel like they were playing the "it game" and they never realized they spend more time in twitch chat then with a community that is no longer even a community.

Never quite understood what my server did to make ranking up insanely fast and easy, but pool parties sounds about right. I just recall them mentioning bracket alts.

FF14 strikes me as a game that really takes advantage of the sunk cost fallacy. The traditional "It gets good 100 hours in" comes to mind, which to me, as an outsider who nevertheless tried the game several times, is absolutely insane. I can just play a game that gets good immediately. In fact, I can play multiple games like that in the time FF14 purportedly takes to get "good." This isn't to say other MMOs are innocent, it just always struck me as unintentionally revealing/hilarious when fans of the game went with the "it gets good X hours in" line.

World of Warcraft never ceases to amaze me with the way players expertly fuck eachother over. Its never just "fkd ya mom"; its "this player spent months pretending to be someones friend only to then pull the most petty shit imaginable" That is dedication I can respect
